Vernacular Aesthetics of Everyday Life
What Beauty Are We Allowed to Talk About?
For a long time we have hung "aesthetics" high on gallery walls, or sealed it in vitrines alongside a handful of refined objects. To whom does that over-packaged elegance, cut loose from any real context, actually belong?
If we strip the curated filter away, Taiwan's east coast may have already given an answer, coarse and unmistakably real: aesthetics might be more than that. It might be a bearing worked out by ordinary hands — a way of taking root, of standing up to wind and rain. Oil-stained clothes at the harbor before dawn. A mail route scribbled over and redrawn by hand. The bowl of hot soup set out for a neighbor who came by to help bind the mugwort.
These trivial, sometimes bedraggled labors carry the most grounded dignity we know.
This is what we would like to open up for discussion: if beauty cannot respond to real life, what is it for?
Shifting the Gaze: Returning to Life Itself
Some exhibitions go too far in commodifying local objects, or in aestheticizing them into art pieces, leaving the audience to look on from a consumer's distance. But the force of this coastline has never been the refinement of its finished goods. It lies in how ordinary people actually live.
Something like an aesthetic sovereignty is at work here. The people here do not set out to make art, yet in following the solar terms, in the labor of mountain and sea, in the small exchanges between neighbors, they show the beauty of survival at its most real.
They bend with the seasons in the terraced fields, ferment the terroir in earthenware crocks, and open a door onto an alley to tell a story.
This time we set the lofty gaze aside, and ask you to step into these unpolished scenes and see the beauty that resilience and everyday intelligence have built.
Categorization Is Only a Slice
Sounding Out the Fluid Shapes of Living
Facing the wildness and resilience of a land with mountains at its back and the sea at its face, any framework turns rigid. The five categories we propose may look like an easy road to labeling, to fixing a life in place. But any categorization, any reading made from the outside, is only a label — and a label is no more than a starting point for coming to know a person, or a thing. From there the work begins: drawing slices out of a dense living network, opening up a way of seeing.
Here, someone in Mountain and Sea Wilds may also be a cook practicing food as medicine; a Drift Maker's offhand work may be the daily labor of holding a community's culture in place. Think of these categories as tuning dials on the texture of a place, turning this whole coast into a fluid museum without walls. Together we can look past the surface, follow the tracks of sound and material, and find in these slices of living the true frequency of coexisting with the land.
Wild Lives Moving Between Many Roles
Categories are one tool for understanding the world, but real life here runs free beyond every boundary. Many people on this coast live without a time clock. They change roles with the pulse of the seasons and of mountain and sea — perhaps planting rice in the terraces one moment, out checking nets the next, back in the workshop shaving wood and weaving rattan.
Mountain and Sea Wilds, Earth and Healing Food, Drift Makers, Local Broadcasters, Life Guardians: not five sealed boxes, but five dimensions of living, woven through one another. Through ambient soundscapes, oral histories, and objects gathered in the field, the exhibition catches what is brilliant and passing in that motion. You will find that categorization is only one way to cut into a place — and that what moves us is the untamed, stubbornly resilient life behind the cut.
